无色微棕色油状液体。有醚样气味。能被强碱分解。18℃时100ml水中能溶解18g，并迅速水解。溶于乙醇、乙醚、二氧六环、丙酮和芳香烃类，微溶于二硫化碳和脂肪烃类。相对密度(d204）1.3322。熔点-27℃。沸点约188℃(分解）、76℃（2.0kPa）。
硫酸二甲酯，有机化合物，无色或微黄色,略有葱头气味的油状可燃性液体，在50℃或者碱水易迅速水解成硫酸和甲醇。在冷水中分解缓慢。遇热、明火或氧化剂可燃。硫酸二甲酯是可使DNA甲基化的试剂。经甲基化后，DNA可在甲基化位置被降解。
